19.

Stepping inside the Gooble Gobble Country Kitchen was a unique experience. It was fairly busy, and the appearance of about half the people in the place would have surprised me a few minutes earlier. In fact, I had become accustomed to the physically unusual in a remarkably short time, and what I noticed first about the people in the restaurant was that they seemed friendly and nice. Molly, of course, was completely comfortable with them, and everybody spoke freely to her, as though they already knew her.

“I’m not going to be able to finish my jitterbug,” Molly said. “Either of you guys want some?”

“I’m good with my toast,” I said.

“Mmm, toast! Yummy!” Vern Chuckoff said.

A neighborhoodnik named George had joined us at our table. It was impressive to see him deal with pancakes and syrup using his toes.

“How about you, George? Want jitterbug?”

“That stuff’s for tourists,” George said. “I’m more of a pancake man. Now, to your question about a blue circus wagon, I’m not sure, but if anyone around here has one, it would be Valter van der Seagull.”

“Walter?”

“Valter.”

“Seagull? Like the bird?”

“It’s his name. Valter van der Seagull. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the bird. You can ask him yourself when you go to find out about the blue circus wagon.”

“Vhere . . . I mean where . . . does Valter van der Seagull hang out?”

George gestured over his shoulder with his toe. “You can go across the field behind the Gooble Gobble, and you’ll come to a little dirt road. Make a right, and you’ll come to his place in about a minute. Little house, five big barns. Lots of people call him Valter Five Barns.”

“Because he has five barns.”

“No, that’s just a coincidence. He came from a town in Connecticut called Five Barns.”

“Because there are five barns there.”

“I suppose so. I’ve never been.”
